Infinite is a FREE open-source modular audiovisual workstation

Indie developer and musician Naman Soni has released Infinite, a free and open-source modular audiovisual workstation for macOS and Windows.

Infinite is a standalone application that combines a node-based sound-design environment with real-time 2D video compositing and procedural 3D tools. All of these components are connected through the same modulation system.

INFINITE — MODULAR AUDIOVISUAL WORKSTATION

On the audio side, it’s pretty wild. There is a wavetable synth, granular engine, metallic modal resonator, PaulStretch spectral processor, sampler, onset-detecting sample slicer, and eight-track drum machine.

Note and MIDI tools include an arpeggiator, sequencer, chorder, strum generator, humanizer, and quantizer.

As for the audio effects, you get filters, EQ, dynamics, a lookahead limiter, delay, reverb, drive, pitch and frequency shifting, chorus, phaser, and formant processing.

Key feature:
The rack can function as a fully self-contained instrument and effects setup without using any third-party plugins.

The modularity puts Infinite in similar territory to Bespoke Synth, although Infinite also treats image, video, and 3D geometry as part of the same patching environment.

The current library contains more than 140 node types spanning synths, effects, modulation, analysis, compositing, rendering, and output.

INFINITE — NODE-BASED PATCHING ENVIRONMENT

Infinite can host third-party AU plugins on macOS and VST3 plugins on both platforms. Plugins open with their native interfaces, and their parameters can be controlled from the rack using LFOs, pattern CV, envelope followers, or live eight-band FFT analysis.

That cross-domain modulation is what really blew me away here. An audio envelope could drive a visual parameter, for example, while the audio and GPU processing graphs remain synchronized to the same BPM transport.

Visual Processing

The visual side covers GPU shaders, image and video processing, 31 blend modes, 3D geometry, particles, physics, and synchronized H.264/MOV recording.

Syphon on macOS and Spout on Windows provide video input and output for connecting Infinite to other visual software.

Embedded Programming Language

There is also an embedded programming language called Field.

It lets users write per-sample DSP effects or polyphonic synth voices, create pixel shaders and geometry modifiers, and export finished devices as portable .field files.

System Requirements & Downloads

Infinite v0.3.4 is available directly from GitHub.

  • macOS DMG — 10.7 MB
  • Windows x64 ZIP — 22 MB
  • Windows ARM64 ZIP — 21.4 MB

The macOS build is ad-hoc signed, so you may need to right-click the application and select Open. The repository also provides Gatekeeper instructions if it remains blocked.

It’s always fun to see people reinventing / perfecting for their needs the old Max + Jitter, or PureData + GEM idea. I’ll definitely give this one a try.

I paid up for mnodes because they claim they will be able to compile to VST later and because they work as a VST. Working as a VST is a huge plus, along with CV to trigger.

First try using it, I found some issue with FPS inside this software. To fix this issue, you need to cap framerate for this software manually via GPU utility software such as Nvidia/RivaTuner.

Thanks! If only I had an infinite amount of time to learn how to use this! :)
