Panokseon (판옥선) was a large Korean warship of the Joseon dynasty, developed in the 16th century. It was one of the main warships used by Korean naval forces during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–1598).

Key features

• Multi-deck design: Soldiers and sailors worked on separate levels, making it difficult for enemies to board.
• Powerful artillery: It carried cannons and could attack enemy ships from a distance.
• Oar-powered: Large numbers of rowers allowed it to maneuver even when wind conditions were poor.
• Sturdy construction: Its broad, relatively high-sided hull was designed for stability and combat.
• Different from the Geobukseon: The famous turtle ship (거북선) was a specialized armored warship derived from the broader Korean naval tradition; the Panokseon was a more conventional but highly important fleet vessel.

The Panokseon formed the core platform of Admiral Yi Sun-sin's fleet, alongside specialized ships such as the turtle ship.
