SANTO IGNATIUS

When people refer to Saint Ignatius, they are usually referring to Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits. However, Church history also prominently features Saint Ignatius of Antioch.

1. Saint Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556)

A Spanish knight turned theologian, best known as the founder of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) and a leading figure in the Counter-Reformation.

• The Conversion: In 1521, while defending Pamplona against the French, a cannonball shattered his leg. During a painful recovery, he read books on the life of Christ and the lives of the saints. The experience inspired him to abandon his military ambitions and dedicate his life to God.
• The Spiritual Exercises: During a period of intense prayer in Manresa, Spain, he wrote the Spiritual Exercises, a set of structured Christian meditations, prayers, and mental exercises designed to discern God's will.
• Founding the Jesuits: In 1534, along with Francis Xavier and five companions, he founded the Society of Jesus in Paris. They took vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience to the Pope, focusing on education, missionary work, and intellectual pursuit.
• Motto: Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam (AMDG) — "For the greater glory of God."
• Feast Day: July 31.

2. Saint Ignatius of Antioch (c. 35–c. 108 AD)

An early Christian martyr and the third Bishop of Antioch.

• Legacy: A disciple of the Apostle John, he was arrested by Roman authorities and transported to Rome, where he was martyred in the arena (traditionally fed to wild beasts).
• Letters: On his way to Rome, he wrote seven letters to early Christian communities. These letters provide some of the earliest insights into Christian theology, church hierarchy (bishops, presbyters, and deacons), and sacraments. He was also the first written source to use the term "Catholic Church" to describe the universal body of believers.
• Feast Day: October 17 (Western) / December 20 (Eastern).
