Telepathy
Direct transmission of thoughts, feelings, or information from one mind to another without physical interaction.
1. Parapsychology & Science
- Scientific Status: Pure mental telepathy is widely classified as a pseudoscience. Rigorous double-blind experiments (such as the Ganzfeld experiments) have failed to produce replicable, statistically significant evidence under controlled conditions.
- Physical Constraints: The human brain emits faint electromagnetic signals (EEG waves), but these decay almost instantly outside the skull and lack the power or structure to be transmitted across distance without external receivers.
2. Technology ("Synthetic Telepathy")
While biological telepathy remains unsupported by science, neurotechnology is developing technical equivalents using Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs):
- Decoding: Neural implants (like Neuralink or Utah Arrays) and non-invasive EEG headsets capture motor or linguistic intent directly from cortical activity.
- Encoding: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) or direct neural stimulation can deliver sensory signals back into another individual's brain.
- Brain-to-Brain Interfaces (B2BI): Experiments have enabled basic signal transmission between human brains over the internet, converting recorded brain signals into light flashes (phosphenes) or motor triggers.
| Type | Mechanism | Current Real-World Status |
|---|---|---|
| Latent Telepathy | Mind-to-mind transfer with a time lag between transmission and reception | Theoretical / Parapsychology concept |
| Precognitive Telepathy | Transmitting thoughts regarding future states of mind | Unproven / Pseudoscience |
| Synthetic Telepathy | Digitally reading brain signals via BCI and transmitting them over networks | Experimental technology (Neurotech) |
